History

Nowadays Suryanamaskar is an unavoidable part of Yoga. However it is not described in Patangali yog sutra, Hathapradipika, Gherand samita, Yog Vasistha or any main Literature of Yoga.

Worshiping Sun as God is there since the Vedic period. However practising a chain of asana with mantras and pranayama in suryanamaskar is a recent development- i.e. after 15th -16th century. In Maharashtra, Guru of Shivaji Maharaj, Samarth Ramdas Swami use to practice 108 suryanamaskar every day. He spread it all over Maharashtra. In 19th century in Mysore Yogi T. Krishnamacharya and in Aundh Pant Pratinidhi to Raja of Aundh made suryanamaskar popular as a simple, easy, short and effective way of health practice. The first mention of suryanamaskar is found in the text of Shri Tatwanidhi.

Worshiping the Sun-Why?

We all know Sun is the only and basic natural source of energy for the whole world. On earth all living beings are directly or indirectly dependent on the sun for their food.

In the presence of Sun (i.e. daylight)energy level of many living creatures including human are high and can do their work with maximum physical and mental capacity.

Night time is for relaxation and sleep.Sun is the only power which we can see, feel and use for our benefits. Therefore we worship the Sun as God, for taking care of us.This worshiping makes our mind humble, trustworthy, innocent and controls our emotional imbalance.
